Picture Burgundy - Painting Holidays in Burgundy France
“An empty canvas is a living wonder … far lovelier than certain pictures.”
Wassily Kadinsky
“All artists are vain, they long to be recognised and to leave something to posterity.
They want to be loved, and at the same time they want to be free. But nobody is free.”
Francis Bacon
“When I've painted a woman's bottom so that
I want to touch it, then the painting is finished …”
Pierre Auguste Renoir

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you, not just the art, but the tasters of the area; not having to think about where to go; the excellent food and very relaxed atmosphere. We were very comfortable in your home.
You not only gave us the opportunity to improve our painting (not difficult), but you really put yourselves out for us and "looked after us" wonderfully. What more can I say?"
Jane and Richard Hatton - Home Counties.
We specialize in painting holidays which are offered all year where you can paint out on location in the warmer months, or in the house during the winter. They include studio work, trips out to glorious locations, instruction in techniques and the use of different media. All levels of ability are catered for.
A typical week will include all these elements and more under the guidance of your mentor Colin. After a creative day you are invited to a long leisurely meal taken outside whenever possible and share your experiences. There are several restaurants within a few minutes drive which serve both lunches and evening meals if you wish to eat out.
The first day here will start after breakfast before being introduced to the facilities. Fun tuition is the key word! We want you to leave us feeling relaxed and inspired whether you are an experienced artist or have never picked up a brush or palette knife before.
Basic equipment is provided such as drawing boards, on-site seating etc., but art materials are not provided. We suggest you bring your favourite medium and materials. There are many on-line art suppliers such as artyfolk who are very reasonably priced. We can offer you the chance to purchase supplies of brushes, oils, acrylics, paper and boards at local retail rates if you wish. Extra materials will be charged for. A digital camera may prove to be useful so bring one along if you have one. Good quality brushes are essential so if you have your own set please bring these along too.
Colin will be pleased to advise you about individual requirements if necessary as he encourages guests not to be afraid to experiment with a variety of media.
The ultimate studio is all around you in the countryside where a multitude of subjects are at your fingertips. Days will merge with sessions in the studio or out in village, town or countryside locations. These offer a wealth of flora, fauna and architecture in diverse and captivating landscapes. Beaume Les Messieurs, Chateau Chalon, Louhans, Rosay and the land of lakes are all beautiful painting locations.
A typical week will be designed around your needs. Whether you want to immerse yourself in producing still life work, capturing the moment of a plein-air session, or exposing yourself to new techniques and media, Colin will advise and encourage you all the way. Your style is your own and you work at your own pace. You are assured plenty of individual attention.
You can choose to paint as much or as little as you wish and if your preference is to sit in the garden with a good book and a glass of wine, then the choice is yours.
Of course each day will depend upon the weather and activities will be adjusted accordingly.
As we cater for only four people you can be assured of plenty of individual attention when holidaying with us. This is a huge advantage when you come on a painting holiday. Of course larger painting groups can be accommodated as there are a good selection of b&bs and hotels near Les Lavandes where we can arrange further accommodation for people attending larger workshops.
Non-painting partners can be assured of having plenty to do and see. You could accompany your partner when out on location or explore on your own. However, car hire is recommended, if you wish to explore, as public transport is limited.
