Painting Holidays - What can we do?

If you don't know your palette knife from a fish knife. If you can't tell a number 6 brush from a 6" brush - no matter. All I ask is that you have a vague idea about what you want to make, from the facilities we have and the locations we present to you. I will then do my level best to help you achieve this. At our house we offer you the uninhibited chance to renew old skills, try anything from scratch and use any item of mark-making tool that you wish, helping you to broaden your artworking experience.

We use still lifes, all manner of real life, books, objects, photographic prints, digital and conventional photography, computer downloaded and generated images. Plein air drawing and sketching can be daunting for beginners and experienced artists alike - but it needn't be. We can - and will - visit some of the prettiest locations in the region, where we can capture snippets or portray scenes in their totality.

Above left: Portrait in gouache on ceramic glazed roof tile.

I have deliberately chosen locations not frequented by hordes of extraneous persons gawping over one's shoulder as one works - it will be just us with plenty of chance to concentrate. These locations are in addition, magnificent leisure locations (I like to squeeze more than one use out of everything in life!).

Direct to paper, no prior sketching.

But why do I take such a seemingly 'laissez faire' attitude? Because for more than 20 years I have serviced the commercial world of art (advertising, publishing, print and marketing). I have had to be extremely inventive to produce the artwork clients demand of me, using practically every medium you can name !

So, I will ask you which medium you might like to use for the type of image you wish to create - and then we'll discuss how you might best to go about creating it.It does not normally take me long to understand what it is that my guest-clients want from our holidays. We can use anything and everything from chalk and charcoal to technical pen. Pastels to acrylics. No holds barred !

But please remember - a week, in reality, is a very short time! Take out meal times, travel, a little personal leisure time
and you will have had to have been working hard to produce more than 3-4 decent pieces of work. Seriously.

Typically 'though, our guest clients still manage to cram in additional fun sessions such as capturing each other's image in timed,
face-to-face situations, in a given chosen medium (harder than it sounds !).

And yes, we'll talk about the colour wheel, perspective, additive/subtractive colour, but to be honest it's all there in front of you, as we create.
You only need to know what you're looking for - and what you are actually already looking at.

But don't worry at all. If I think you need me to, I'll point it all out to you as we go!
